Many years ago I owned Westerly 22 sail number 76, originally the property of Warren Misell, known as the actor Warren Mitchell, and named after his wife. She is based on a design called the "West Coaster", with the intended use within the Irish Sea off the west coast of northern England where the shallow draught and the ease of taking the ground was paramount, with our large tidal range and many drying harbours.<br /><br />I don't know how effective the hydrofoil section on the bilge keels really is, I doubt that I ever got enough speed on her to make them work! However, she was weatherly enough, and took me and my family on a few good adventures to the Isle of Man and North Wales, including a memorable trip through the "Swellies" in the Menai Straits.
